Member Convening: Building Inclusive Democracy

Overview

The People Powered 2024 Member Convening took place in Warsaw on May 19-22, 2024. We co-hosted it with our member organization the Shipyard Foundation and partnered with our friends from NED and NDI. See a reportback on the convening for details. The activities included:

  • A full day of site visits to see inclusive participatory democracy practices in action. On this tour, we met Polish organizations doing groundbreaking work with climate assemblies, legislative theater and participatory processes in general.

  • Practical workshops focusing on communication, facilitation and problem-solving skills. We uses some of our time together to learn how to develop stronger narratives for participatory democracy, problem-solve practical challenges for engaging marginalized communities in participatory processes, and use People Powered’s online training on inclusive democracy in our work.

  • Spaces to learn from each other. We had opportunities for members and allies to present research papers, exchange expertise, share good practices, tell their stories of success and discuss lessons learned.  

  • Opportunities to connect with civil servants who are running participatory democracy programs in Europe. As part of the partnership with NDI, we welcomed a group of PD practitioners from local governments in Europe and get the chance to listen to their challenges concerning implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

  • Regional hub activities. Our Central and Eastern European members presented some of their biggest success stories and challenges.

  • Bonding time with other members! We got to spend a couple of days together, after asking members to “polish” their best dancing moves, bring copies of favorite recipes and get ready to share favorite songs with the PP community!
