Legislative theater manual

A detailed manual in English, Romanian, Hungarian, Portuguese, Greek and Polish for practitioners interested in using legislative theater in their work.

Legislative theater, a method of the Theater of the Oppressed, can be used to address oppression at the systemic level. This manual details how to approach this method, along with reflections on some of its principles and dilemmas.

The manual (created for the European Union project “Using Theatre to Make Politics”) is meant for practitioners in the Theater of the Oppressed field who are highly motivated to work with the legislative theater method. It aims to:

  • Provide them with theoretical background and practical tools.

  • Increase their impact on their society (by applying this method).

  • Increase their motivation and belief that systemic change is needed and possible.

It includes a step-by-step guide for design and implementation, with an analysis of challenges, examples and 50 preparatory exercises (group building, drama, and theater games, specific exercises for legislative theater, improvisation, getting into character, activities to support rehearsals, etc.), and instructions for evaluation and impact assessment (including a template for an observation sheet).
