Building citizenship creatively: The legislative theater of Augusto Boal

A short paper analyzing and explaining the history, structure, functioning and phases of legislative theater.

Legislative theater is presented as a tool for building citizenship. It uses expressive creativity as a collective and collaborative tool and as a transformative force for environments and social groups, especially those which have been excluded and deprived of the right to speak publicly.

Legislative theater has the ability to bring a new dimension to creative cities: transitive democracy, a choice between direct democracy and representative democracy.
