Apply for a People Powered Board

Are you interested in helping to build a stronger global movement for participatory democracy? People Powered is seeking passionate new board members to serve on three organizational boards. Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is the high-level governance body for People Powered. It guides strategy and policy, plans for financial sustainability, and ensures that the organization is carrying out its goals effectively. 

Responsibilities

  • Participate in up to six board meetings per year, generally via video call.

  • Participate in occasional discussions and meetings outside of board meetings, as part of smaller board committees or initiatives.

  • Be available to staff for consultation and guidance.

  • Know, review, approve, and monitor the organization's budget, strategic plan, and major organizational policies.

  • Actively support organizational fundraising. This may include connecting the organization to funders or donors, writing or revising fundraising proposals or appeals, donating, thanking supporters for their contributions, or other tasks.

  • Actively promote the organization and represent it in a positive light.

Qualifications

  • Relevant expertise for carrying out the organization's work, which may include but is not limited to communications, advocacy, fundraising, technology, International law, international development, public and nonprofit administration, and organizational management.

  • Passion for the organization's work to build participatory democracy around the globe. Previous experience with participatory democracy programs is ideal.

  • Ability to communicate professionally in English.


Global PB Research Board

The PB Research Board coordinates global research on participatory budgeting (PB) and its impacts. 

Responsibilities

  • Help develop and implement a global PB research agenda, supporting new studies and collaborations that address research priorities. 

  • Participate in up to six board meetings per year, generally via video call.

  • Participate in occasional discussions and meetings outside of board meetings, as part of smaller teams or initiatives.

  • Be available to staff for consultation and guidance.

Qualifications

  • At least two years of experience conducting research or evaluations of PB.

  • Commitment to using research to improve and grow PB practice.

  • Ability to communicate professionally in English.


Global PB Practitioner Board

The PB Practitioner Board guides global coordinated work to support PB implementers and advocates, in order to improve PB practice and impacts.

Responsibilities

  • Help prioritize, develop, and share resources and tools that address the needs of PB implementers and advocates. 

  • Participate in up to six board meetings per year, generally via video call.

  • Participate in occasional discussions and meetings outside of board meetings, as part of smaller teams or initiatives.

  • Be available to staff for consultation and guidance.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience implementing a PB program, as a government official, civil servant, consultant, facilitator, or community leader.

  • Commitment to supporting other PB implementers and advocates.

  • Ability to communicate professionally in English.


Expected time commitment for each board is approximately five hours per month, for a two-year term. These are unpaid volunteer positions, though we will pay travel costs for in-person meetings.

Global PB Research and Practitioner Boards
