Pushing at the limits

A blog post focused on cases in Canada, U.S.A and Italy where PB has been used to reintegrate incarcerated people into society.

PB has been used as a part of different programs in prisions around the world with the aim of re-habilitating and re-integrating incarcerated people in society.

In Communitas Montreal, a reintegration programme in Canada, participants selected ideas such as purchasing board games, an art show where members can fundraise for their organization, and a scholarship for children whose parent has been incarcerated.

In the NYC Council, 100 formerly incarcerated individuals participated in a budget assembly where they submited ideas, including erecting a statue of an important figure. In the project Idee in Fuga, in Italy, participants came up with ideas to meet the needs that resulted from the experience of being in jail, such as an inmate area for conjugal visits and a small cheese factory to create jobs.

After participating in these processes, people reported that they gained confidence in their ideas, and they emphasized the importance of PB to have a voice and make their community safe. These processes also revealed that incarcerated people are interested in decision-making for the common good. Additional info is also available here.
