New Online Course: How to Engage Immigrants & Refugees in Participatory Budgeting

We’re excited to announce a new online course to help you use participatory budgeting to engage immigrants and refugees.

There were 272 million international migrants in 2019, including nearly 80 million forcibly displaced people: refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people (IDPs). Conflict, natural disasters worsened by climate change, and economic need have driven increasing numbers of people to seek safety, human rights, and well-being in new countries.

It is vital to include immigrants, refugees, and IDPs in civic life and community decision-making to help them integrate into their host society. Participatory budgeting (PB) can be a highly effective and practical way to integrate these newcomers into your community.

In the next People Powered University online course, “How to Engage Immigrants & Refugees in Participatory Budgeting,” you will learn how to make PB and other participatory processes more inclusive, engaging, and empowering for immigrants, refugees, and IDPs. Leading advocates, organizers, and researchers from Ukraine, Colombia, Taiwan, Sweden, and the United States will share best practices, review lessons learned, and help you plan the next steps for taking action.

This course follows our course on how to engage disabled people in participatory budgeting. Both courses were identified as priorities by People Powered’s boards and member organizations and are made possible thanks to funding from the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation.People Powered UniversityPeople Powered University
