Beyond Elections: A new media series & newsletter with Proximate

This year, four billion people around the world are participating in elections. But for many people, elections alone are not delivering the democracy that they need. In cities and countries around the world, innovators are expanding democracy beyond elections, through participatory and deliberative programs. 

To help share these experiences and their impacts, People Powered is partnering with Proximate on a new newsletter and media series — Beyond Elections. Proximate is a nonprofit newsroom, launched in 2023, that covers movements for participatory problem-solving. Beyond Elections collects original stories, op-eds, and conversations that explore our collective ability to reimagine what democracy looks like between and beyond election cycles.

The first issue of Beyond Elections is out now, featuring stories on the slow adoption of citizens’ assemblies in the United States, new ways for democracy to work in conflict zones such as the Gaza Strip, and strategies for combining citizens’ assemblies and participatory budgeting.

We look forward to working with Proximate to share stories of how people around the world are making the decisions that affect their lives.
