Impacts of Participatory Budgeting: Research Priorities

Since its creation in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in the late 1980s, participatory budgeting (PB) has brought change for people, communities, and governments around the world. A growing body of research documents the impacts of PB on governance, well-being, civil society, political participation, education, and learning. Still, there is a need for more research into PB’s potential to contribute to long-term social and political change in different contexts.

Based on what we know about the impacts of participatory budgeting (PB) and its theory of change, this resource provides questions and topics that are top priorities for further understanding and improving PB’s impacts, identified by the Global PB Research Board.

The resource can be downloaded in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian and Chinese.
