Join this event to learn about the unprecedented constitutional process that is happening in Chile, a clear example of how people can come together to shape the law and reimagine the unfair norms that affect them.
Since the 2019 uprising known as ¡Chile despertó! (Chile woke up!), the South American country has been taking steps to fundamentally deepen its democracy. In October 2020, almost 80% of the Chilean population approved — via a plebiscite — a process for writing a new constitution through a democratically elected Constitutional Convention. In May 2021, members were elected in a way that guaranteed gender parity and reserved seats for indigenous peoples. Now is the moment to shape new norms through an exemplary democratic process.
Join us to explore this constitutional process and its next steps. We will hear from elected constituents from indigenous communities and feminist and environmental movements, as well as special guests from other regions. Jointly we will discuss what we can learn from this experience that can help us to advance justice and deepen democracy in our different contexts.
