2023 Planning Process and Board of Directors Selection
The 2023 planning process & board of directors selection are two parallel decision making processes that will run between September 12 and December 18, 2022. All People Powered members are invited and encouraged to participate. Find more information about the different phases and the steps to be part of the next year’s planning process and selection of new board of directors members below and on the following pages.

Idea collection [Sept 12-30]
Review previously funded programs, eligibility criteria strategic plan, and 2023 People Powered commitments (below).
Share and discuss ideas with members through idea collection calls. Register for idea collection calls here
Add ideas to the governance platform individually or in groups.
Proposal Development [Oct 3-21]
Develop your idea! You will receive a message if your idea is eligible. Develop it before Oct. 21.
Give and get feedback through video calls and the governance platform.
Prioritize ideas: select your 5 favorite ideas by clicking on ‘’support’’ in the governance platform.

Board of directors Selection
Nominations [Sept 12-30]
Learn about the role, qualifications and responsibilities of the members of the board of directors below.
Nominate someone you think would be a good fit, or nominate yourself through the governance platform. When nominating someone you need to work together on the nomination.
Conversations and review [Oct 3-21]
Learn about the candidates, and ask them questions through the governance platform.
Join the conversations with the candidates, or review the recordings of the conversations.
Vote [Nov 11-18]
Vote for up to seven board candidates. Candidates must receive support from a simple majority of voters (>50%) to be eligible for election.
What to know before submitting ideas?
Eligibility Criteria
Proposals will be considered eligible if they meet the following criteria:
Consistent with People Powered’s mission and values.
Contributes to the goals of People Powered’s strategic plan.
Relevant and applicable in more than one country.
Something that we can realistically implement by the end of 2023
Spending proposals must cost no more than $100,000 USD.
Proposals that benefit groups in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and/or Latin America will be prioritized.
Proposals that build on existing projects and infrastructure will be prioritized.
2023 People Powered Commitments
People Powered has already committed to the work listed below in 2023. These commitments are part of 2022 prioritized projects or projects that are funded through external grants.
Communications
Content: Create multimedia content telling 3 stories of inclusion of women, youth and displaced people in participation programs.
Events: Hold 2 promotional webinars for the Digital Participation Platform ratings and Participation Playbook.
Resources
Digital Participation Platform ratings: Release new and improved ratings, and improve the ratings website.
Participation Playbook: Revise and publicly launch the Playbook. Develop new content for national level climate/environmental democracy programs.
Materials: Develop 4 new info sheets on inclusion of women, youth, and displaced people in participation programs, and on national level climate democracy programs. Integrate content into the playbook.
Capacity Building
People Powered University: Develop 3 online courses, on inclusion of women, youth, and displaced people in participation programs. Deliver 1 research seminar, on national level climate democracy programs.
Cohort Support Programs: Provide comprehensive support for multiple cohorts of government and civil society innovators to launch participatory programs. Provide mentorship, training, and peer support, using the Participation Playbook to develop action plans for each program.
Climate Democracy Action, September 2022 - February 2023 Cohort: Support 40 local governments and organizations to launch participatory programs that address climate change.
Rising Stars, September 2023 - February 2024 Cohort: Support 30 local governments and organizations to launch participatory programs (possibly expanding the offering to include a focus on climate change, digital policy, or other issues, pending funding).
Community Building
In-person convening: Bring together the 13 member organizations leading the Building Inclusive Democracy program in Mexico City in May. The convening could potentially be expanded with additional funding.

Selection of Board of Directors
Responsibilities and Qualifications
Board role
The board of directors is the high-level governance body for People Powered. It guides strategy and policy, plans for financial sustainability, and ensures that the organization is carrying out its goals effectively.
Responsibilities
Participate in up to six board meetings per year, generally via video call.
Participate in occasional discussions and meetings outside of board meetings, as part of smaller committees or initiatives.
Be available to staff members for consultation and guidance.
Know, review, approve and monitor the organization's budget, strategic plan, and major organizational policies.
Actively support organizational fundraising. This may include connecting the organization to funders or donors, writing or revising fundraising proposals or appeals, donating, thanking supporters for their contributions, or other tasks.
Actively promote the organization and represent it in a positive light.
Qualifications
Relevant expertise for carrying out the organization's work, which may include but is not limited to communications, advocacy, fundraising, technology, international law, international development, public and nonprofit administration, and organizational management.
Passion for the organization's work to build participatory democracy around the globe. Previous experience with participatory democracy programs is ideal.
Ability to communicate professionally in English.
Eligibility Criteria
Individuals will be considered eligible for the Board of Directors if they meet the following criteria:
Relevant expertise for carrying out the organization's work, which may include but is not limited to communications, advocacy, fundraising, technology, International law, international development, public and nonprofit administration, and organizational management.
Demonstrated passion for the organization's mission and work.
At least 3 months of prior involvement in People Powered, as a member, partner, or collaborator.
Ability to communicate proficiently in English.
Previous experience with participatory democracy programs is ideal.
